Craps Table Limits
There are three types of table limits that you will see on a regular basis. These are minimums, maximums, and the table odds. Now when you’re looking for the right table at which to play, you’ll want to make a point of looking at these three limits because they will dramatically affect the type of play.
Craps Table Odds
To start with, take a look at the table odds. If you aren’t interested in playing the odds bet (also known as a free odds bet) you can simply ignore this value as they do not pertain to you. If however, you are planning on taking advantage of the low house edge offered by odds bets this is vital information. The table odds is the specified multiple of your flat bet that can be made as an odds bet. For instance, if the table odds are 3x, you can make an odds bet of 3x your original bet (line bets, or come/don’t come bets). Although this value should be printed directly on the table, if it is not you can always ask the dealer.
Craps Table Maximums
The next value to look at is the table maximum. The table maximum is the highest bet that can be played on the pass line, the don’t pass line, the field, and for place bets. This maximum is also the maximum payout that can be paid from winning proposition bets. Just as the proposition bets (the most aggressive bets) are exceptions from the table minimum, odds bets (the most conservative bets) are also exceptions from the table maximum. Odds bets are free (partially) from the constraints of the table maximum bet. If the table maximum is $10,000, and you make a pass line bet of $10,000 you can still make odds bets by the standard rules. If the table odds are 5x, then you can make a $50,000 odds bet in addition to your $10,000 pass line bet. This means you’ve got 6x the table maximum on the table at once (and even more depending on your table odds.)
Craps Table Minimums
The table minimum is the last value to consider. This minimum is the smallest bet that can be played on the pass line, the don’t pass line, or the field. Generally though, the minimum will not apply to any proposition bets. If you are a newer player look for a table with a low table minimum to make sure you can learn the rules without putting too much on the table. For more experienced players you will probably be willing to play at some higher stakes tables.
