The Luxor Las Vegas Resort

front sideThe Luxor is possibly the most recognizable casino resort in the world and it is located on the Las Vegas Strip. It was built from 1991 until 1993 and was part of the effort to make Sin City more family friendly. Its Egyptian theme made an ideal choice for couples with children, but in 2008 this theme was largely replaced with more modern, adult oriented decor. Even though the theme may have gone in a new direction, you can still find the famous Sphinx replica guarding the entrance to the massive pyramid shaped resort, and the spotlight the stars shines on.

The Hotel

The hotel in the Luxor resort is like nothing you have seen before. The rooms are situated along the exterior walls of the building, but since the walls are sloped, you can't just take a normal elevator to your floor. To get guests around, they installed "inclinators" that climb up the inside of the walls to get you to your floor. From the hallways, you can look down into the world's largest atrium in the the center of the hollow building.

The rooms themselves are nothing special. While they were probably the best thing since sliced bread in '93, nothing lasts forever. They could definitely put a few million into remodeling, but until they do, it is what it is. For a major resort right on the Strip, this place is a budget hotel. It might be cheap by Super 8 standards, but compared with establishments like the Bellagio, you're getting a steal.

There are a handful of restaurants in the Luxor, but like the rooms, you can find better quality elsewhere. The clubs, however, are pretty nice and get a great, young crowd. These are the LAX Club, and the Cathouse, and they are both exciting, and affordable options. During the day, check out their swimming pool; it's one of the few that is not overly crowded every day by 9:00 am, and they've covered all the bases; music, drinks, and fun in the sun all day!

The Casino

It might seem like a recurring theme with the Luxor resort, but the casino is also showing its age. In its heyday, this 120,000 square foot gambling den was the best in the business. Luckily some of the 2007-2008 renovations have taken care to spruce things up a bit. In fact, if you are looking for some slots, these machines are supposedly looser than many of those in the area. The craps players, however, are not quite so lucky.

The spotlight on the top of the pyramid is the brightest light on earth! It can be seen from anywhere in the area, and even from space!

The Luxor's Casino operates five craps tables during peak hours at limits from $5/$10 to $5000. Although the 3-4-5x odds are not a real surprise, a serious craps player will probably want to chase some higher numbers to make full use of the craps odds bet. Since you are on the strip anyway, why not take a ride on the deuce (the bus) up to Casino Royale where you can enjoy full 100x allowed odds!
